Aikido Seminar And Ibuprofen

Kokyunage

Aikido seminars and ibuprofen.  A match made in heaven.

The dojo that I practice at had a seminar this Saturday.  We had Chris Crandell (4th dan) from Raleigh Aikikai and Larry Ozenberger (3rd dan) from Aikido of New Orleans  as the guest instructors.  Our head sensei Blue Spruell  (4th dan) from our Peachtree Aikikai also taught a class.  We had five hours of training and it was an interesting mix with the three different instructors.  We did not have a huge turnout but we had students from several other dojos come and it was a good mix of people.  Here we are before the pain:

I am one of the few with a good looking hair cut…

We had a nice in house light buffet and beer and Chris Crandall got a  bottle of twelve year old single malt scotch as a gift  that I made sure was safe to drink.  I made several tests in the interest of safety only.  I did not go out for the dinner later that night instead going home to consume anti-inflammatories and hug my ice pack (s).  One of the things I really enjoy about aikido is the family like environment of the practitioners.  Aikido practitioners don’t take themselves to seriously and the range of people that practice is really interesting.  We had lawyers, doctors, corporate VPs, army officers, college students, media, counselors, consultants, engineers and more at this seminar.  All of us humbled by this art.

I managed to pull a hamstring at the end of the day Saturday and tried to work it out with a 5 mile power walk this morning.   I think that I should have stayed in practiced meditation instead.  I was hurting at 3 miles but at about 4 it started raining pretty hard and it was quite refreshing.  The rest of my soreness from the seminar has gone away but the enjoyment of it remains.

I can’t wait for the next one…

God’s Piece of Crap

And the right wing wanted to crucify Obama’s pastor the Reverend Wright.  Yet this piece of human garbage gets up and says that he is praying for the President of the United States death.  I wonder if he offered the same sermon while Bush was in office and abortions were being legally performed or when we went into war on lies and nothing else?  Somehow I think not.

And this guy gets a tax free status for his “church?”  He should get prison time instead.

What more can you say about a maggot like him?

The Thing About Fear Mongering

failhole

The thing about fear mongering is that you need to have an audience stupid enough to not understand that your stated case is exactly the reason for adopting the opposite of what you are proposing.  Fortunately, there were plenty of Republicans in this audience that fit that bill.  However…there appear to be a few free thinkers that saw the….fallacy…. of this Congressman’s attempt at using a child’s serious illness to make him and his position look good.

And a quick exit, stage left by the proven-to-be idiot…

Lies, Damned Lies and Republicans

fox-truth-lies

Let anyone in the GOP make any ludicrous claim and be sure that Fox News will give it some air time and treat it as real.  They Distort, You Comply.

Veterans For Common Sense took exception to one of their more preposterous assertions:

Veterans Demand Apology From GOP And Fox For Lies About VA

The claim that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a manual encouraging veterans to “commit suicide,” made by Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, is an asinine assertion with no basis in fact.

And somebody is surprised?  It is a toss up on who makes more of an ass of themselves these days in the GOP…Palin, Bachmann or Steele.  The Three Stooges of Republicanism.

Steele made the charge two days ago (August 25th) on FOX News. Steele’s egregious comments are an outrageous slander against VA designed to create an atmosphere of mistrust and fear among the millions of our veterans who rely on the VA for medical care. Veterans demand an apology from Steele and FOX News.

“Let me be absolutely clear, Steele lied. There is no VA manual encouraging veterans to commit suicide,” said Paul Sullivan, the executive director of VCS, a non-profit based in Washington, DC providing advocacy for veterans, especially veterans with mental health conditions.

Never let it be said that facts get in the way of a good attempt by the Republicans and Fox (redundant, I know)  to scare the American people.

The unconscionable comments by Steele on FOX News followed an attempt last Sunday by FOX News to selectively edit government documents in an effort to attack VA. According to Media Matters:

“On Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace repeatedly cropped quotes from a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) document to falsely suggest that the Obama administration is pressuring veterans to end their lives prematurely and to accuse Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs Tammy Duckworth of lying about it. In fact, contrary to Wallace’s false assertions, the document he referred to does not require doctors to direct veterans to what conservatives have labeled the ‘Death Book for Veterans.’”

But you can be sure some of Fox’s faithful out there are ready to march, with guns in hand, to a town hall and harass some Congressman about this evil socialist plan.  Damage done.  Mission Accomplished.

Fair and Balanced, don’t you know?

Those Damned Commies!

Why…they make sense.

Maybe Obama should hire those guys and replace whoever is handling the talking points for his health care reform now.

Or…just continue sitting back and letting the Republicans control the debate and scaring the crap out of people….

Fighting Back Against Socialism

As I mentioned the other day, insidious socialism is everywhere and we need to stomp it out while we still can.

Free market capitalism is the only answer.  Now get out there and push to close your local fire station and make those commies work for a living.

christ zombiesI find it interesting that believers in the Christ myth are so upset at being presented with something as simple as this billboard:

atheist-sign

But oh, the wailing and gnashing of teeth!  One protest group says that stating being a good person doesn’t require God is discrimination against Christians.  Interesting that their faith is so shallow that a mere billboard causes such consternation within the Christian community.  I was talking with a fellow yesterday about the fact that Christians do not like to have their beliefs challenged.  Not only that, they have a very superficial understanding of the history of their cult.  Circular logic is the preferred method of explanation by them in countering skeptics.  It is in the bible and if you go turn to this page you can see that it is true.  If you don’t believe what is written in Luke then go to Deuteronomy and see?  It’s true!

An argument that I get regularly when debating Christians is “Don’t believe what you read in those books.”  Those books being anything that contradicts their bible.  Yet they will believe without questioning what they read in one book.  Well researched, reasoned books that explore the real history, facts and assertions of the bible are to be immediately discounted if…they refute the bible.  The Institute for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the “Intelligent Design” movement has their “researchers” sign a compliance statement that says they will discard any material that contradicts the bible.  They can’t allow any straight lines to penetrate their circular logic.  Logic that says the earth is only 6,000 years old, a special family took two of every animal on the planet on a big boat and road out a flood that killed every other living thing by the God they loved, that God got so frustrated that his people couldn’t live by his laws (he couldn’t figure that out after Adam and Eve?) so he made himself into his son, had him killed and brought him up to heaven with him and his buddy the holy spirit and called it a sacrifice and that just believing that will let you join his cloud club forever and ever.  But don’t believe what you read in “them books.”

A friend of mine that is Jewish yesterday told me that the reason that Jews can take advantage of heart valves from pigs is that Rabbis determined that since they weren’t ingested that they were acceptable.  I told him that the reason they are OK for Jews is because the Rabbis that make the rules utilized an arbitrary interpretation that suited their needs.  Religious texts support or disavow whatever believers want them to.  Hate gays, love gays.  Tolerance, intolerance.  Kill, don’t kill.  Pigs bad, pigs good.  And so forth.

Faith is the big trump card.  It is seen as the ultimate atribute.  It can’t be challenged and is above reproach.  Unless it is a faith that is different.  Muslims are seen as infidels to Christians.  Christians are seen as infidels to Muslims.  The Boy Scouts of America insist that you believe in a God to be a member.  Any God will do, they say, as long as you aren’t an unbeliever you automatically have what it takes to wear their patches.  Faith.  It takes off where facts end.  And they are proud of it.  Ignorance is a badge to be worn with honor because they have faith.  And their faith is not benign.  It tells them to hate, to discriminate, to kill, to legislate their beliefs and so forth.  It tells them to withhold medical attention from their kids because God will cure them if they pray right, in some (too many) cases.

Thinking is hard.  Faith is easy.  It is also a cop out.  An interesting article by the Pew Forum on Religion and Science:

How The Public Resolves Conflicts Between Faith And Science

….”When asked what they would do if scientists were to disprove a particular religious belief, nearly two-thirds (64%) of people say they would continue to hold to what their religion teaches rather than accept the contrary scientific finding, according to the results of an October 2006 Time magazine poll. Indeed, in a May 2007 Gallup poll, only 14% of those who say they do not believe in evolution cite lack of evidence as the main reason underpinning their views; more people cite their belief in Jesus (19%), God (16%) or religion generally (16%) as their reason for rejecting Darwin’s theory.”

And Their Leader Is…

godscrackbeck

A snivelling douchebag.  Or what passes for a journalist on Faux Noise in the form of Glenn Beck.   And of course World NutsNet Daily is a good go to rag for the most insane drivel that passes for news.  There are a host of other blithering idiots, racist ass hats and drooling dittotards throwing their bile and nonsense into the ring as well.  It is interesting that their bizarre and ludicrous reactions to this administration are at such a fever pitch less than a year into Obama’s first term.  After all they were silent while GW Bush used the Constitution for toilette paper as he held an American citizen in prison for five years with no due process, operated secret prisons and tortured people-in some cases to death-spied on us without warrants, pushed citizens attempting to exercise their First Amendment rights of protest into cages called, ironically, “Free Speech Zones” and used political Red Squads to infiltrate and compile dossiers on non-violent law abiding groups.  That and more.  None of which seemed to bother these defenders of the American Way.  It leads one to believe they just can’t stand having a black man as president.  It is rather humorous observing their antics, but unfortunately the humor is tinged with a sense of trepidation as it makes me wonder how far some of these selectively patriotic radicals will go.

McClatchy takes note of the insanity that has taken over a sizeable portion of the GOP base:

Secret Camps And Guillotines?  Groups Make Birthers Look Sane

Is the federal government building secret camps to lock up people who criticize President Barack Obama?

Will it truck off young people to camps to brainwash them into liking Obama’s agenda? Are government officials planning to replicate the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror, using the guillotine to silence their domestic enemies?

One can only hope.  I am reminded of a quote by Right Wing spokesskank mAnn Coutler:

“We need to execute people like (John Walker Lindh) in order to physically intimidate liberals.”

And that got some hearty guffaws and “10-4s” from the Republicans.  Ha-ha!  Intimidate liberals!  Those damn America haters!

No. The charges, of course, are not true.

Darn.

However, the accusations are out there, a series of fantastic claims fed by paranoia about the government. They’re spread and sometimes cross-pollinated via the Internet. They feed a fringe subset of the anger at the government percolating through the country, one that ignites passion, but also helps Obama’s allies to discount broader anger at the president’s agenda.

In one, retired FBI agent Ted Gunderson says the government has prepared 1,000 camps for its own citizens. He also says the government has stored 30,000 guillotines to murder its critics, and has stashed 500,000 caskets in Georgia and Montana for the remains.

Why guillotines? “Because,” he wrote in a report obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, “beheading is the most efficient means of harvesting body parts.”

I wonder why hospitals don’t utilize the guillotine as they work with the organ donor programs in most states?

In a second warning, the Web site Worldnetdaily.com says that the government is considering Nazi-like concentration camps for dissidents.

But of course, they would have to hire the Nazi-like Republicans to run them…

In another ominous warning, a group called the Oathkeepers boasts that it wouldn’t cooperate if the government orders dissidents locked up.

“We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext,” the group says in its list of top principles.

Oathkeepers is built around the idea that its members — active and retired military, police and firefighters — all have taken an oath to defend the Constitution, not the federal government.

And as I said, where were these selectively patriotic people while the Constitution was ignored and abused by the last administration?  Oh yeah.  They were his supporters.

Whether inspired by the group or not, the message of loyalty to the Constitution has been heard in many of the angry protests in town hall meetings this summer against a proposed health care overhaul — often side by side with the suggestion that the health care proposal is unconstitutional.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., also is worried about the federal government and children, saying a bill expanding the AmeriCorps volunteer service could lead to mandatory camps for young people.

Of course Moon Bat Bachmann is such a reliable source of information.

“And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums.”

Yes, they would have to wear lederhosen, learn to goose step and wear their Obama Kinder patches proudly.

We are not even a year into this administration and we are already diving the Mariana Trench depths of insanity.  They have nothing to propose, no constructive alternatives, no positive plans or anything constructive to promote.  Hate, paranoia, lunacy…in other words S.O.P for the G.O.P.

Take No Prisoners

gop-down-in-flamesI had some interesting conversations yesterday about the Dems’  inability to close the deal on health care reform while having an overwhelming majority.  The GOP is in complete disarray and the only thing they have managed to do is work their base into a frenzy of hate and confusion as the Party presents no viable alternative to our current health care paradigm.  Rachel Maddow has a very good piece on the state of affairs with the Republican Party and their antics:

Scare tactics, incoherent arguments based on everything but facts and reality, ad hominem attacks and a host of other hyperbolic rhetoric is all the GOP has.  Oh, and a committed determination to oppose everything proffered by the Democrats.  Or, as the following illustrates quite well:

hc-gop-prescription

It is my hope that with Congress in recess that House and Senate members regroup, refine their talking points and come back determined to quit trying to appease the Republicans.  Then they need to give the people what we want, which is a public option to private health care vultures.  Hopefully the passing of Senator Kennedy will galvanize the so-far spineless Democrats into putting down their whiffle bats, stepping up to the plate and playing some hard ball.  Otherwise, Mike Luckovich will have hit this nail on the head:

Mormonism. Like A Religion, Just Creepier.

August 29, 2009 notimefortrivia 14 comments

mormon weirdass baptismal

So…a couple of months ago I went to look at a demolition project at a Mormon Temple in Atlanta.  The church had to do some weird ceremony and rites to make it OK for contractors to come inside.  I bid church projects all the time and have never heard of a church having to do that before.  Anyway, the place was fairly normal except the room where they baptise people that are already dead.  The room that they do it in was quite similar to the picture above, but more modern and not quite as ornate.  There was a glass wall that the elders sat behind and watched as a proxy would come to the pool and go down into it to be baptised in the name of some dead person.  The regular congregation is not allowed into this “special” place.  All of the contractors that were with me were rolling their eyes at this bit of weirdness.

I saw a piece over at Pensito Review where he notes some of the people that the Mormon church has baptised after they died.  Charming people that  any church would be proud to have as members…

Mormon’s Postmortem Baptisms Include Seriel Killers And Right-Wing Terrorists

Mass murderers and serial killers are among the millions of deceased who have been posthumously baptized in temples owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). These names include the modern-day dictators and mass murderers — Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, and Mao Zedong. Other multiple murderers have been posthumously baptized in Mormon temples, like prolific serial killer, Ted Bundy.

Bundy, who was once a Mormon, is one of the most infamous serial killers in U.S. history. His primary occupation in life was the murder and mutilation of young women. He also engaged in necrophilia, which is a sexual attraction to corpses. Bundy destroyed many innocent lives — and his victims may have numbered over 100. Nevertheless, Ted Bundy was baptized by proxy on May 28, 2008, in the Jordan River, Utah, (LDS) Temple.

Who wouldn’t want Ted Bundy in their afterlife congregation?  He really was quite charming.  Some of the other….ummm…unique characters they have baptised postmortem are:

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer

John Wayne Gacy

Timothy James McVeigh

And there are some others listed in the piece.  It goes on:

The LDS Church claims to be the one and only divinely mandated church on Earth — a wholesome, family-oriented religion. Yet, the ghoulish Mormon practice of baptizing mass murderers and psycho killers presents an ungodly and debased standard. When Mormons think they have the power to offer salvation to mass murderers and serial killers, essentially, they are attempting to assign redemption to a dark and unholy place.

Mormonism.  Like a religion, only creepier.
