Can you believe he wants to talk with our enemies???

Is he some kind of surrender monkey, bed wetting, tree hugging closet Muslim one man terror cell?  Nah…he’s General Petraeus:

Petraeus: US Should Talk With Taliban, Other Enemies

Much has been made of the rumored peace talks between Afghanistan and the Taliban, and while both the Taliban and the Afghan government have made rather public denials that any such talks are ongoing, the United States has been totally silent on the report. That is, until today.

Today, General David Petraeus confirmed that Afghan President Hamid Karzai has in fact asked Saudi Arabia to arrange peace talks between his government and the Taliban. He also referenced “some local activities” to that end.

And while the general said he didn’t want to “get into the middle of domestic politics,” he appeared to endorse the idea, saying that he thought the US should talk with its enemies. In the case of Afghanistan he said “the key is making sure that all of that is done in complete coordination with complete support of the Afghan government and with President Karzai.”

How cowardly.  Talk.  Anybody can talk.  But Americans Kick Ass!!! And look how well it has been working out for us.  And about that “victory” we are all so looking forward to to justify all of what we have done and spent and died for:

New U.S. Intelligence Report Warns ‘Victory’ Not Certain In Iraq

A nearly completed high-level U.S. intelligence analysis warns that unresolved ethnic and sectarian tensions in Iraq could unleash a new wave of violence, potentially reversing the major security and political gains achieved over the last year.

U.S. officials familiar with the new National Intelligence Estimate said they were unsure when the top-secret report would be completed and whether it would be published before the Nov. 4 presidential election.

Hmmm…might it blow the lid off of the “I know how to win wars” blather of McCain?

The findings seem to cast doubts on McCain’s frequent assertions that the United States is “on a path to victory” in Iraq by underscoring the deep uncertainties of the situation despite the 30,000-strong U.S. troop surge for which he was the leading congressional advocate.

And that same NIE lets us know how our War on Terror is fairing in Afghanistan:

U.S. Study Is Said To Warn Of Crisis In Afghanistan

A draft report by American intelligence agencies concludes that Afghanistan is in a “downward spiral” and casts serious doubt on the ability of the Afghan government to stem the rise in the Taliban’s influence there, according to American officials familiar with the document.

The classified report finds that the breakdown in central authority in Afghanistan has been accelerated by rampant corruption within the government of President Hamid Karzai and by an increase in violence by militants who have launched increasingly sophisticated attacks from havens in Pakistan.

And this tidbit:

The report cites gains in the building of Afghanistan’s national army, the officials said. But they said it also laid out in stark terms what it described as the destabilizing impact of the booming heroin trade, which by some estimates accounts for 50 percent of Afghanistan’s economy.

So…we have failing governments, a simmering situation in Iraq that could explode back into the sectarian/ethnic bloodletting of the past five years and heroin is doing fine in a bull market for narcotics.  Progress sure takes some bizarre forms.  I would say that the past seven years of war have left their stamp.  And it says “Fail.”
